Nebivolol, a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker, exerts its effects by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart and vascular smooth muscle. Its primary mechanism of action involves reducing cardiac output and lowering blood pressure. Nebivolol inhibits the binding of catecholamines, such as norepinephrine, to beta-1 receptors, which decreases heart rate and myocardial contractility. This reduction in cardiac workload leads to a decrease in oxygen demand by the heart. Additionally, Nebivolol promotes vasodilation by enhancing the release of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator, in the vascular endothelium. This dual action of beta-1 receptor blockade and nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation contributes to its overall effect in reducing peripheral vascular resistance and improving blood flow, ultimately resulting in a decrease in blood pressure.
