Atorvastatin is a medication primarily used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is crucial for the production of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking HMG-CoA reductase, atorvastatin effectively reduces the synthesis of cholesterol, leading to lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol. This decrease in LDL cholesterol helps reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes. Additionally, atorvastatin can modestly increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as good cholesterol, which further supports cardiovascular health.
