Gentamicin, the active ingredient in Gentamicin eye drops, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that primarily acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, leading to misreading of tRNA, inhibiting translocation, and causing the formation of faulty peptide chains. This binding is irreversible and results in the disruption of bacterial protein synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. Gentamicin is particularly effective against a wide range of gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common cause of eye infections. By interfering with vital protein production, Gentamicin helps control and eliminate the bacteria causing the infection. Used for treating bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the eye. Used for controlling bacterial growth in eye injuries or post-surgery. Used for preventing bacterial infections in susceptible eyes.
