Cefaclor is a bactericidal antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class of beta-lactam antibiotics. Its primary mechanism of action involves interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Cefaclor binds to and inhibits specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which are essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan strands, a crucial component of the cell wall. By inhibiting PBPs, Cefaclor disrupts the cell wall synthesis, leading to the weakening and eventual rupture of the bacterial cell wall, resulting in bacterial cell death. Used for managing acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Used for treating urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Used for controlling certain types of pneumonia.
