Valsartan, a selective competitive angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) antagonist, blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, leading to decreased vascular contractility and cardiac venous return. Its actions on angiotensin II receptors directly involve vascular smooth muscle contraction and tubular sodium reabsorption in the kidney.
