Betamethasone, a potent synthetic corticosteroid, is the primary active ingredient in Betamethasone, Neomycin Ointment. It works by mimicking the effects of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands, primarily glucocorticoids. When applied topically, betamethasone penetrates the skin and binds to intracellular receptors, triggering a series of cellular responses. This leads to the suppression of various inflammatory mediators and immune cells, resulting in reduced inflammation, itching, and allergic reactions. Neomycin, the other component, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that acts by binding to bacterial ribosomes, disrupting protein synthesis, and ultimately killing bacteria.
