Ginkgo biloba, a tree native to China, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Modern research has revealed the various bioactive compounds in ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), including flavone glycosides and terpenoids such as ginkgolides and bilobalide. These compounds are believed to be responsible for the therapeutic effects of GBE. GBE's antioxidant effects protect against the damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can lead to inflammation and various health conditions. Its primary antioxidant effect comes from the flavonoids in GBE. GBE also works to improve blood flow through the inhibition of an enzyme (ADP ribosyl cyclase) involved in the formation of platelet-activating factor (PAF).
