Ciprofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of drugs. It is specially formulated to treat infections of the eyes and ears. Ciprofloxacin oral suspension is used to treat throat infections, pneumonia, and other bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting the action of the DNA gyrase enzyme, which is essential for bacterial replication. This enzyme is not present in humans, making ciprofloxacin a selective antibiotic that targets bacterial infection without harming human cells. When DNA gyrase is inhibited, the bacterial cells cannot replicate and eventually die. Ciprofloxacin is often used to treat infections caused by Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, among others.
