Tapentadol acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system. These receptors are part of the body’s natural pain control system. When tapentadol binds to these receptors, it mimics the action of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. This binding reduces the perception of pain by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. Tapentadol also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine. By preventing the reuptake of norepinephrine, tapentadol increases its levels in the synaptic cleft (the space between nerve cells), enhancing the descending pain inhibitory pathways.
